Ashwaganda Latte

For a great calming adaptogenic drink to help balance hormones, consider curling up with this ashwaganda latte. Ashwaganda is an adaptogenic herb that is native to India, Africa and the Middle East. Also known as "Indian Winter cherry" has been used for a millennia for a number of health conditions for people of all ages. Ashwaganda root can be mixed with milk and used as a tonic for young children. Other benefits of this amazing plant include treating rheumatism, constipation, insomnia and thyroid conditions.

Interestingly ashwaganda is known as an "adaptogen," meaning that it helps the body respond to stress, fatigue, anxiety and improves overall wellbeing. This powerful herb can help improve energy and also help calm the body. Certain plants and mushrooms have adaptogenic active ingredients which help the body cope with stress and return the body back to balance.

Other examples of adaptogens include ginseng, Eleuthera and rhodiola. It is possible to find these adaptogen in teas, capsules or tinctures. Some adaptogens should be taken twice daily for optimal support (such as rhodiola and ashwaganda) and others should be taken during the day for increased energy (such as Asian ginseng).

Adaptogens can interact with medication, so it is important to discuss starting these with a knowledgeable healthcare provider. Additionally, just like with any medication or herb, there can be side effects from adaptogens. Side effects can include allergic reaction, constipation, diarrhea, nausea or abdominal pain.
